Juanita Bynum, the Self-Declared New Face of Battered Women

It has taken me quite a while to write this editorial on how I really feel about Juanita Bynum's bold declaration that she is the new face of the battered woman. While I deeply regret the way she was beaten at the hands of her husband, I must also question her sincerity, or lack thereof
of making such a declaration. You see, since this was not the first time she was beaten by a husband, I am left to wonder why she had not made such a declaration before after her first marriage ended. I believe that her new platform, however ambitious, is motivated by financial benefits at the expense of women. It is a real shame that one must question the motives of our religious leaders today. Some are sincere, while others are in purely for financial gain, or simply, the prosperity gospel. The religious leadership in our country is under siege as many are now questioning their message and their motives. Richard Roberts, president of Oral Roberts University, has been accused of mishandling money donated to the school to finance a lavish lifestyle. Many have been accused of sexual impropriety, such as the disgraced Ted Haggard and Paul Crouch of media empire TBN. It is a sad commentary that many of these religious leaders do not practice what they preach. On the one hand we are being told to marry for better or worse, in sickness and in health, when they are doing the opposite. Paula and Randy White have filed for divorce due to irreconcilable differences. All these people are fabulously wealthy, in part, on the backs of some poor and middle class people who are struggling to make ends meet, while seeking their piece of the prosperity pie the preachers have been dishing up for quite some time.

I'm sorry but no we do not think its sacrilegious to say no. In fact I'm not a catholic, Lutheran or any other label we cloak ourselves in, I just believe in Him. And there are bigger reasons than "saying no" that hold battered woman in their places. Like your boyfriend describing how he'd kill you then all the cops he could before killed himself, likewise went for my dad, my brother, and anyone else who stood to get in his way. The only way out was my way, to stand up and get out safely. Besides this I think this was a very informative and well written article

I have been reading allt through these letters about the sex thing. I do not care two hoots about it. It is not cracked up to what we hear. I was happily married for close to 43 yrs. My husband died. I used to look forward to it in dread. I even get tired of hearing about it. Maybe some of these women get divoriced because they are being worn out. They think it is sacreligious to say NO.

Actually he has; According to a September 12, 2004 Los Angeles Times story, Paul Crouch, president of Trinity Broadcasting Network, paid Enoch Lonnie Ford $425,000 in 1998 in exchange for his silence about an alleged homosexual affair they'd had in 1996 at a TBN-owned cabin near Lake Arrowhead, California. As Advocate.com reported, The world's largest Christian broadcasting network responded on Wednesday to recent news articles about its operations and once again denied a claim by a former employee that he had a gay affair with its founder. The Trinity Broadcasting Network issued a press release claiming that articles published by the Los Angeles Times over the past week failed to accurately depict the Costa Mesa-based organization in a fair light. "The newspaper's publisher has its own agenda," said TBN spokesperson Colby May. "Its reporting has been selective and subjective." [The LA Times has run over 3000 stories about Crouch and TBN.] The strong response from the Christia

I have to speak up here. Paul Crouch has NOT been accused of any sexual impropriety. Perhaps you are confusing him with someone else. Paul and Jan Crouch are excellent, humble people who try to give everyone a chance. They have accomplished a lot in their service to God.

He told us to be "cheerful givers" in his word and he also told us whenever we give to do it as if doing it unto him and he will reward us. Not to please men or to be worried about what one might use monetary or other gifts for. We should all read our word and pray to find out what God wants us to do individually so our souls may be at peace with one another. Remember people of God, God rains on the just and the unjust and he would like all souls to be saved and when we make mistakes he wants us to forgive and pray for one another that we may be strengthend for our next short coming or battle. In the word it says,"If we confess our sins and ask for his forgiveness, he is just to forgive us of them all. It also says, in order for him to forgive us we must forgive each other". Let's be hearers and doers of the word together. God loves us first, that's why he gives us a choice. I love us too and may God be with us all.

I would like to say that no one is perfect. We were born and shaped in inquity and because of that reason on any given day, even as believers striving to walk as christ walked, we will be tempted by satan. Jesus was tempted at every point but remember he was the only perfect being living on this earth without sin though he was surrounded by it and because of his knowledge and power over it he didn't have to worry about falling. We must understand that Jesus was in the world but not of the world. God is so forgiving because he knows we are not perfect. Everyday it is a struggle to keep in mind who's we are and to remain faithful in every situation when we are striving to live christ-like. Please don't forget how many short comings you may have trying to live for God in this corrupt world. As far as giving, if it is a problem for you, just don't do it because God knows our hearts. He told us to be "cheerful givers" in his word and he also told us whenever we give to do it as if we

Excellent article. Down through the years, I have had the honor of having some very strong and powerful women as mentors in my life. They had been physically abused, sexually abused, mentally abused, and everything else by someone who was dear to them. I have never seen any of these women, gloat in the spotlight, or behave as Juanita Bynum has done in her situation. There is nothing glamorous about domestic violence. If you are going to share your story with the world, share it as an overcomer, without fanfare , so that you can help someone else to rise above it all.

Well said Alyce. Too many people live superficial lives and only want to keep up with the Joneses, but really don't know the real deal behind how some of the clothes they wear are being made, especially those being made in sweatshops or blood diamonds.

I think somewhere in that post, is the reason people like Oral Roberts, and Bynum go astray, getting caught up in the trappings of the world. Someone said the "best sermon is a good example", which is sadly lacking in today's world. Many females devote their lives to raising awareness and funds to help victims of domestic violence. Perhaps the seed money should be going to the organizations they create that provide shelters and help, rather than minstry's that build Crystal Cathedrals.

My mother had a saying: Give and spend and the Lord will send. She is not of the Christian religions that stress "seed money", but it is the same idea. It probably caused fights with my more budget minded father. She would spend on expensive clothing, rather than buying from a poor, struggling seamstress. I do not think money is the root of evil, but the desire for more possessions than we need. As a female I would not want a diamond, knowing what is being done to the women in the Congo to provide them.
