When children are out of school for the holidays, it can be a stressful time for parents who are struggling to juggle household needs, visiting relatives, and meal planning. Children should never be made to feel that they're "in the way." But it can be increasingly difficult to get certain things done while keeping the kiddies entertained. Shoving kids in front of a television or gaming system seems like the sure-fire way to keep children occupied. But it's not always the best, or most productive. Here are few ways to keep your sanity, while making children feel like a part of the festivities.

Play Rooms...

When other children are visiting during the holidays, try to designate a specific space where they can color, paint, play, and interact without disturbing adult conversations. You may not have a specific play room, per se. But sectioning off a den, study, or even an area of the living room so that children have their own space, could be just the breather you need. There is nothing wrong with watching a few holiday movies or cartoons. But keep books or other creative activities on hand. It will help stimulate the mind and body while they snack on holiday goodies.

Play Dates...

One of the best inventions in parenting is the play date. It is extremely helpful if you can schedule a chaperoned outing with other children while you prepare your home for Thanksgiving and Christmas festivities. Check around locally for sponsored activities that are either low-budget (or better yet, free!) and offer to establish a play date schedule with other parents or guardians. The rotation of authority will be a great big relief for you. But the change of environment will help keep children from getting "cabin fever" while you prepare for guests.

Family Game Time...

Takeaways
  • Play "restaurant' with your children by giving them light jobs to do.
  • Volunteer your time in the community with them; it will nourish your relationship.
  • Schedule play dates, and create play areas to keep children occupied and safe.
