The Urbana Park District is a very good way to get involved in your community. They offer great volunteer opportunities that are available to anyone. If you enjoy working outside, love nature, and like working with your hands, then you should consider volunteering. One way to volunteer is to help with a work day. There are four different work days at which one can volunteer.

During workdays volunteers do many things. They may remove invasive plants such as non-native plants, like Bush Honey Suckle and Garlic Mustard. They may also improve trails, plant trees and flowers, and clean up. All of this helps to improve the environment as well as the impression of its visitors.

The first workday is in Busey woods, a 59-acre preserve that is located in Meadowbrook Park. It has an entrance that is located near the Nature Center on Broadway. This park features lots of different types of plants and trees. It also has an overgrowth of non-native plants that need to be removed so that other plants are not killed by their invasiveness. This workday meets in the Nature center.

The second workday is at Meadowbrook Prairie/Park. This park is covered in prairie which has been restored by many workers and volunteers throughout its years. They have been restoring prairie here since 1978. Volunteers meet at the Race street parking lot.

The third workday is at Weaver Park. This park is in the process of Savanna restoration. This is a very uncommon ecosystem and with your help it can be restored. Volunteers meet at the intersection of Main street and Smith road.

The fourth workday is at Perkins road wet prairie. With the help of the Illinois Department of resources conservation program, the Urbana Park district has started to restore this area. When it is finished the area will have native plants and places for bird watching. Volunteers meet at the Dog Park parking lot that is located on Perkins road in Urbana.
