Charles Dickens was an influential novelist who is considered to be one of the greatest of the Victorian period. Dickens’s works are characterized by attacks on social evils, injustice, and hypocrisy. He also experienced in his youth oppression when he was forced to end school and start working due to his family’s financial troubles, and as an adult his marriage failed mainly because of his unfaithfulness. The many hardships that he experienced during his childhood and personal life influenced some of the characters he later wrote about in his novels. He has written some of the greatest novels which still captivate people to this day.
