Aiming
One of the first things you need to consider when buying birding scopes is how they're aimed. You can choose to have a straight or an angular configuration. Straight birding scopes are aimed just like binoculars. Angular scopes can rotate from a mount and will put less strain on your neck and back. They are ideal if multiple people are using the scope.
Magnification
One of the next things you need to consider when buying birding scopes is magnification. Magnification can either be fixed or variable. If you choose a fixed design, you will likely need a 20x or 30x. However, lenses with larger magnification will also distort the light more. Birding scopes can also have variable magnification. They usually range from 15x to 60x. You can use the smaller magnifications to locate the bird, then magnify it further to give you more detail of the creature.
Sunshades
You should also look for birding scopes that have sunshades. You will inevitably come across bright glares while watching the birds in the sky. Therefore, you should look for birding scopes that have built-in sunshades. The sunshades should also have the ability to slide out and in easily so that you can take them out whenever they're not necessary.
Mirror
If you don't want to use traditional birding scopes, you can get one of the newer designs. Instead of using traditional prisms, they use 90 degree diagonal mirrors. Birding scopes with mirrors will produce a higher quality image. This is due to the fact that there will be no loss of light which is one of the problems with using a prism. However, these scopes will be more fragile than traditional designs, and you will have to protect it from the elements carefully.
