Five Ways to Keep Your Bird Entertained While You're Away

In an ideal world, owners of parrots and other birds would be available to cater to their pets' needs twenty-four hours a day...well, in the bird's eyes, anyway. But let's face it: Many of us have jobs or other obligations that require at least some time away from home. Some folks work eight-, ten- and even twelve-hour-a-day jobs. This doesn't necessarily mean that we can't enjoy the companionship of a pet bird. It just means we have to be a bit more careful about choosing the correct pet for the situation and knowing how to keep their intelligent minds occupied and stimulated.

1. Toys

This may be the obvious choice but there is more to it than just hanging some bells in a cage. Millions of toys are on the market for purchase. Many owners save money by making their own toys for their birds. The important thing is to find a toy that is safe above all, and also fits the tastes of your particular bird.

Some birds like to chew and would therefore like wood toys or toys that are easily shredded. Some prefer bright colors and loud sounds. For other birds, interactive and "thinking" toys may be the only type that keeps their minds busy. Puzzle toys, musical toys, talking toys, shredding toys, colorful toys, swinging toys....there is just about every toy imaginable out there.

Anytime a new toy is introduced to a bird, it's imperative that both are observed together to ensure the safety of the bird.

2. Radio

Leaving a radio on throughout the day is a great way to keep the bird's mind occupied. Just like people, they have their own preferences. Some like rock as opposed to country while others prefer talk radio. In either case, I've found that changing to a different station each day to offer a little more variety keeps the birds more interested.

3. Television

A television is another way to stimulate the minds of birds. It acts in much of the same way as a radio to a bird but along with stimulating sounds, the bird is able to get visual stimulation.

Be careful to only put the television on a channel that shows appropriate material. A bird that watches TV all day can easily begin to mimic what he is watching. It's not uncommon to get a "potty mouthed" bird this way.

  • Each bird has his own preference; choose toys that he'll actually play with.
  • Playing a radio or the televion can be a great way to stimulate the bird during the day.
  • Anything that keeps the bird's mind occupied will help keep them from getting into trouble.
