It is a good ideal to inspect the wood on the outside of your home. If you locate any cracks in the wood you should put caulking in those places. You may see seems that also need to be filled in with filler before painting. Touch up old rusty nail heads with fresh paint. If the wood has any depressions from nails use putty to fill in these places. Then smooth over these places with a putty knife. Check for flaking and peeling paint, and if you see any scrape it off to make a smooth surface for painting. Wood filler can be used if you have problem areas like cracked or rotting wood.
