When I was little the entire family got together at my great grandparent's house for special occasions like Thanksgiving. Great grandmother asked each one of us to bring a note card with is, on which we had written things we were most thankful for that year. It was a wonderful exercise in family togetherness, love, and humor.

A lot of families have similar traditions. It is a way to remind us that even when life gets us down, we must remember the good things in order to get through. With that thought in mind, I conducted an experiment among family, friends, acquaintances and AC colleagues (who I also consider my family and friends). I asked each of them to answer a single question: "What are you most thankful for this year?"

I knew my daughter's response before I even asked the question. She is thankful for her adorable son and her wonderful husband; for her faith; and for her family.

My four-year-old grandson said he's grateful for mommy, daddy, nana, papa, mimi, his "other papa," his friends, his teddy (a gift from me last Christmas) and Pumpkin (a bear dressed as a pumpkin that I just gave him).

My neighbor is thankful to have her dog still with her. She is all the real family that Judy has left in the world. He was diagnosed with cancer four years ago but treatment and drugs have kept him going strong.

My daughter's best friend is always thankful when her husband returns from one of his many tours of duty; for her three wonderful children; for her family in Texas; and for friends like my daughter.

I am thankful that I didn't lose my husband to his heart attack last Christmas; for my recovery from a bone staph infection and a heart that keeps beating no matter what. I am also thankful that my mother is still with us; for my beloved children and their spouses; my remarkably beautiful grandchildren (the lights of my life); and for my extended family.

Takeaways
  • For this piece, I talked with family, friends, neighbors, acquaintances, and AC colleagues.
  • A few responses were eye opening, to say the least; especially those filled with "hate" speech.
  • The best responses came from my AC colleagues who are always quite remarkable.

This is a terrific article. Thank you so much for including me. I just took a few steps without a cane and was as proud and happy as a toddler. I am thankful for so many things in my life, in spite of troubles and trials. Thank you for putting this together. Happy Thanksgiving to all.

I am thankful that I still have Len with me after being diabetic for 33 years. Having had no end of heart attacks, having had quintuple by pass surgery, 2 stents, and a further 2 stents, only having 50% of his heart working, 41% of his kidneys working, on insulin for the past 13 years and so much more.

Beautiful piece!!! Thank you so much for writing this. I am thankful for my family, friends, my renewed love of writing and the opportunity to read all of the amazing articles by my fellow writers on AC. I learn something new every day and that is truly a blessing.

Another great article, as yours always are. Sorry I was gone and didn't get to contribute my two cents' worth. I have found that as we get older and more infirm, we learn to appreciate more of the things we once took for granted. I was always a runner--everywhere I went. Then in the last several years I reached the point where even walking was almost more than I could manage. After consulting a number of doctors, I finally found one who thought it would not be too great a risk to replace my hip, and it has really turned my life around. I can once again walk well, and thank the Lord for that fact every day, in addition to all the things others are grateful for.
