If you own guppies you will need to have a proper female to male ratio. This is because when you place two guppies together, one guppy will constantly pick on the other guppy. Males are very hard on the females. The males will chase around the females until they become stressed out. It's very important to keep 3 females to one male. This way the male will pick on one of three females instead of only one female guppy. If you do not keep this ratio you will end up with a lot of problems.

The guppies will become stressed out. When guppies get stressed out they begin to get sick. Stressed out guppies will get sick a lot. Most times, the males will chase the female guppies around until they get sick and eventually die. That's why it's important to make sure that you have the proper ratio. While males are not aggressive or territorial, they will chase around the females until they eventually die if you do not have enough females. If you only have one male you will want to purchase at least 3 females.

When you have three times as many female guppies as you do males, you will have a lot of babies in your fish tank. Female guppies will have babies at least once every 30 days. This means that with 3 female guppies you could have around 180 baby guppies in one month. The female guppies will have at least 1-60 babies every time that they give birth. If you decide you don't want the baby guppies you can simply leave the babies in the tank and the female and male guppies will eat all of the baby guppies.

You can usually purchase around 2 guppies for $6. This means that when you purchase 4 guppies it will cost you around $13 or so. If you cannot tell the different between the males and the females you will want to ask and make sure that they are catching you the right ratio of male to female guppies. The female guppies will only have color on their tails. The males will have color on their bodies as well as their upper fin and back tail. If the guppy you see has color on the body or top fin, the guppy is a male and not a female. Females will only have color on their back tail. Females and Males can come in any color imaginable.
