Does your husband have boxes of old NFL memorabilia? Or worse... are those boxes collecting dust in the corner of a closet in space that you could really use for something else? You might not be the biggest football fan yourself, but maybe it's time to take everything out to see what you've got.

If you have a room in your house which you've been waiting to decorate, this is the perfect opportunity. Does your sons bedroom, family game room, kids bathroom or guest room have you stumped for decorating ideas? That old memorabilia may be just the thing you were looking for to add your own personal touch to a boring room.

In my case we chose to deck out our guest room with Dallas Cowboys. It doubles as a play room, so we wanted a playful feel. The football theme felt perfect.

The first thing you need to do, is see what materials you have to work with. The most important question on your mind should be to find out what colors the team has. Doing a football themed room is extra easy when you are basing it on a team. Just take those two or three colors and that is your color scheme.

Home Depot right now has a line of paint out which offers all the exact color matches to every NFL team and some college teams. We went with the Dallas Cowboys signature navy blue for most of the walls. At the top we used their accent color silver to create a border about a foot wide. If you are going with a playful theme, then you can get more creative than just the normal paint job.

We chose to add a whimsical touch on the bottom portion of the wall. We created a football field, complete with yard numbers all the way around the room, about 3 feet high. This breaks up the dark blue walls and makes the room feel less serious.

Take out all those old team pennants as well. These can often be very decorative, and always will stand for something important in the teams history. We used thin thumb tacks and hung pennants around the entire perimeter of the room in the silver stripe we painted. The silver acts as a frame for the hangings. Since they feature the same colors as the paint, they really stand out and make a strong statement.
