Angel Baby was surveying the neighborhood from the front window of the apartment. Since coming to this place, life had become much more interesting. True, the old abode had been larger, and that was better for her humans, but Angel Baby preferred this little one, even though it made her female human unhappy. And if she hadn't come here, there wouldn't have been anyone to protect the kittens. No one else seemed to know about them, living in the basement of the building all alone, scavenging for scraps. Angel Baby shook her head, wishing she could communicate better with her humans -- surely she had been able to speak their language, once? Was that only a dream? She knew what had happened to the kittens' mother, the brindle shorthair. It was those boys...she shivered, her long, silky white fur bristling. They weren't human boys -- they couldn't be! She had never imagined humans could be so cruel, could do such things. Now she was the only one to protect the kittens, for there were no other cats in this building.

That was strange, she thought, washing her face. Suddenly she saw one of the kittens dart out of some bushes and rush across the street. With a screech, Angel Baby squeezed out the narrow window and dashed down the fire escape. What was he doing? Where was he going? Didn't he know about cars? Then she saw them...the boys. Those boys. They were after one of her kittens!
