Amy Tan is the author of such books as "The Joy Luck Club", "The Kitchen God's Wife", and "Mother Tongue." Amy Tan was not always a good writer, but Tan still had a passion for the English language. Amy Tan spoke proper English, which she had learned during her time in school. However, Miss Tan, Amy Tan's mother only spoke broken English. Amy Tan used proper English in her profession where precise instructions are given through words. Amy Tan spoke broken English with her family. Amy Tan knew that the broken English being spoken in her household limited and even handicapped how people see her family in our society. In "Mother Tongue", Amy Tan's mother Miss Tan is looked down on: just because of the way she speaks broken English. Like anyone else Amy Tan uses the English language as a means to communicate ideas, but like in "Mother Tongue", people like Miss Tan are wrongfully perceived as inferior by others who speak proper English.
