Women can choose from a variety of treatments for menopause. Unfortunately, many struggle to decide which menopause treatment is best for them, a problem compounded by the sheer number and variety of treatments available. In a recent press release, researchers have introduced a new tool that will help guide women as they select a menopause treatment.

Researchers from the Maine Medical Center worked together to develop a tool that helps guide women as they try to get their arms around the variety of treatments that are available for menopause. Many treatments have side effects. A menopause treatment may be fine for one woman, yet have negative consequences for another.

Women who participated in the study about menopause treatment received a personalized questionnaire two weeks before their medical appointment. The survey ranged from 35 to 50 to pages long. The survey asked about lifestyle, personal history, symptoms, and family history. It was designed to ferret out many details that could impact treatment for menopause.

The participants brought the completed survey to their physician, who added other details of their life, including weight, blood pressure, cholesterol level. The survey was used to generate risk factors for a myriad of menopause treatments, screen for other common medical conditions, and provide feedback tailored to each participant.

Nearly half of all participants believed that this process was beneficial and a great aid to help them make decisions regarding treatment for menopause as well as other medical conditions. Over half of the participants said that this process gave them more control over the decisions they made regarding health care and menopause treatment.
