The Lemp Brewery in Born in St. Louis, Missouri
The American success story began with Johann Adam Lemp, who immigrated from Eschwege, Germany in 1838. Lemp lived in Cincinnati, Ohio before moving to St. Louis. The German immigrant built a small grocery store. In addition to groceries, he sold homemade lager beer, made from a recipe his father handed down. The lager brew was so popular that Johann Adam Lemp gave up the grocery store after two years and built a small brewery. The original brewery was located near where the famous Gateway Arch over the Mississippi River stands today.
Johann Adam Lemp sold his beer out of a pub attached to the brewery. When he needed more space, he purchased a cave to provide the perfect conditions for the lagering process to take place. By the 1850's Lemp's Western Brewing Co. was one of the largest breweries in St. Louis, which was becoming a great brewery town.
When Johann Adam Lemp died in 1862, he was a millionaire. His son, William took charge of the brewery.
