As the fires in closer and closer to their homes, some geocachers are left with no other choice but to leave home. What do they do before leaving home? They check their email or make a phone call. But who would take the time to do something like that when you don't have much time left before the fire reaches them? Only those who know the geocaching community is their family. Many have been sending emails and phone calls back and forth to let their fellow cachers know that they are not alone and that they have placed clean sheets on the bed in case they need a place to stay.
We have hit serious times and as the fires continue to spread, the Inland Empire Cachers have decided to organize a canned food drive. They hope to begin hosting events where geocachers all over the state can come and drop off their donations. These donations can be canned foods, diapers, tents, sleeping bags, bottled water, clothes, toothpaste...anything a person can think of to donate, will be accepted. From there, the items collected will be loaded up into a truck and delivered to the geocachers who need it the most.
Why so much kindness? Because as a geocacher, you accept other geocachers as family. You attend events together, you find each others geocaches, and you work together in finding other people's caches. Geocaching is about having fun, enjoying the out doors, but most importantly it's about meeting new people and taking them in as family. Geocaching is basically a treasure hunt with a GPS, and it's on a fast pace to becoming a very popular sport among many people which is why the geocaching family is growing. So why wouldn't they help each other?
