More and more people are trying to integrate higher amounts of fiber into their diet as they find out its many benefits. Fiber is indigestible, so it is very good for the human digestive system. As it moves through the digestive tract, it helps cleanse the organs and keeps bowel movements regular. For many people, a lot of the foods high in fiber aren't very appealing to their taste buds. Although foods such as peas, prunes, lentils, and broccoli contain high amounts of fiber, they aren't the best-tasting foods in most people's opinion. On the other hand, there are many foods that contain significant amounts of fiber and also taste great.

Blackberries are the best tasting source of fiber in my opinion. In addition to many other vital nutrients, one cup of blackberries contains over seven grams of fiber. Blackberries are often used to make pies and other desserts, but no matter which way you eat them, they are an excellent source of delicious fiber.

Apples and pears contain similar amounts of fiber at around four grams per piece of fruit. Some say an apple a day keeps the doctor away, and in this case it keeps the colon cancer and irritable bowel syndrome away too. Apples go great plain as well as with cinnamon and sugar or caramel. Whether apples or pears appeal to your personal taste more, they both contain similar amounts of fiber and can help you reach your necessary daily intake.

Oatmeal cookies are another good source of great-tasting fiber. Some may view this as an unhealthy alternative, but that really depends on how you make them. When I make oatmeal cookies, I use only a fraction of the butter and sugar that the recipe calls for. I make chocolate no-bake oatmeal cookies very often with a quarter of the butter and sugar and find that they taste better than the normal recipe. I highly recommend this healthy version of oatmeal cookies for a very fibrous and healthy dessert. Raisins are high in fiber also and can easily be added to the cookies.

Corn bran the highest in fiber yet cornmeal has none if germinated - I bought 100% stone ground whole grain cornmeal coarse grind with the germ and bran left in. - My favorite! I made my own recipe of John Wayne's "True Grit" corn codgers. 1c cornmeal, 1c milk, 1 egg, 1 Tbls. oil, 2 Tbls. molassas, and 1 Tbls. sugar and right before sticking in preheated 375 oven - a pinch of baking powder. This will fit in toaster-oven pan. Gritty Corn Codgers - so ono! Check out AC article: "Recommended Fiber: Are USDA Dietary Guidelines Unrealistic?"
