Electrify Your Electricity Science Fair Projects

Make it Sizzle!

You can definitely put a spark in your science projects when you conduct electricity experiments, of course care and attention must be taken as with any science project. The best results come when ideas and topics are researched and studied carefully and safely. There are several experiments that can be done in the backyard or by setting up a lab right in the kitchen. It's a great way for parents and kids to play and learn together.

The topic of magnets alone, has tons of experiments that can be done with younger children. Explore what a magnetic field is--what it looks and feels like. Study how the earth's magnetic force affects weather and other areas of science. Make a compass to understand better the earth's magnetic force. Do a little Internet research to find other examples for science projects for older kids using magnets, such as testing if high voltage power lines cause cancer. Good question, huh?

For older kids working with electricity, the experiment of splitting hydrogen out of water by using electricity can be an interesting project. This will translate well into the science fair exhibit, complete with models. Speaking of models, what about building a thermo-electric generator? Kits for projects such as these can be purchased with everything needed--supplies, directions and materials for the fair exhibit.

Any type of solar energy study can be included as an electricity project and science fair judges will love these. Solar energy is the new hot topic worldwide and interested kids are needed. Learning how to build a turbine wind generator and discovering how these help save energy is not only a fun experiment, but also an ecologically smart one. Library books, the Internet and kits are wonderful ways to get easy to follow tutorials.
