Since I had never seen the Super Mario Brothers video game adaptation or the Double Dragon video game adaptation I was not prepared for how badly these video game adaptations were going to stink (or at least Street Fighter, the first Mortal Kombat was okay.)
Hollywood stopped making video game adaptations for a while but they seemed to come back into style in 2001 after Tomb Raider and then Resident Evil in 2002. I thought both Tomb Raider and Resident Evil were fine, but not great. Now there are more and more video game adaptations on the horizon. Hopefully some will be good, but let's not get our hopes too high.
By now you may have already seen a trailer for the upcoming Hitman video game adaptation. Hitman is starring Timothy Olyphant, who like the Tomb Raider and Resident Evil casts I think is good, but not great. Hitman is about a hitman (obviously) that has gotten himself mixed up with Interpol and the Russian military.
It seems like a few years ago that I first heard there was going to be a movie based on American McGee's Alice. It looks like Alice is finally started to get underway and the release date for now is listed for July 2008. Alice (from Alice in Wonderland) is now a disturbed young woman and returns to Wonderland to find it much more wicked than before. Sarah Michelle Gellar will play Alice in the video game adaptation.
I can't say that I know much about Stanley Tong, but the director of the upcoming video game adaptation Fear Effect has to be a step up from the original director Uwe Boll doesn't he? The director of Alone in the Dark and Bloodrayne will now turn his attention to the video game adaptation of Far Cry instead.
