The latest poll from the New Hampshire Institute of Politics at Saint Anselm College gives a look at what the results would be if the primary were to be held today.
The winners would be former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney and New York Senator Hillary Clinton.
The respondents in the poll were 1,514 residents of New Hampshire who said it was likely that they would vote in the New Hampshire Primaries.
On the Republican side of the vote, Romney has a lead over the second place candidate, former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani by 11%. Fred Thompson only gets 5% of the vote.
Clinton has a much wider lead over the rest of the Democratic field, leading the second place candidate, Illinois Senator Barack Obana 33 to 22%. Coming in third place is former North Carolina Senator John Edwards with 14%
Clinton has a broad base of support in New Hampshire with both genders, religions and age groups. Surprisingly her she has greater support with the youngest group of voters, 19 to 29 years old, than Obama does and this is supposed to his biggest support group.
Romney also does well across the board with different religious groups showing that, in New Hampshire the fact that he is a Mormon does not make a difference. He also got strong support with women, 37%. With the men, he only got 29%.
When they take a look at the independent voters, things are really up in the air. There is more than 40% who say they are independent or undeclared who say they are not sure if they would vote in the Democratic or Republican primary. New Hampshire is one of a few states that allow independents to vote in the party primaries. As for the rest of the independents, 41% said they would vote in the Democratic Primary and 19% said they would vote in the Republican.
