Always having worked
From age eleven to now,
I'm not sure I can't.

Who I am has been
In large part what I have done.
Self doubt clouds what's left.

I feel silly though-
Knowing I am more than that.
I'm not all that sure.

From my first paid job,
Delivering meat by bike-
Never unemployed.

Change seems a good thing
But cannot be fully felt
Until the day comes.

Contemplating rest,
I wish it and fear it.
Ambivalence lurks.

Contemplating Retirement with Doubt : a Sextet of Haikus

Not working seems like it ought to look more categorically positive than I fear it might turn out to be.

50% of the folks that retire die in the first five years. Primarily because the sit on the porch and slowly die. If a person can retire and remain active it maybe the best decision they can make. Thank You fer sharin'. ;-}}>

My husband retired in '92 from the Post Office after working there for 35 years. Then, 10 months later, he went to work at the school as technology director. He just retired this spring after 14 years there. It was a very hard decision for him, but he finally decided that since he was approaching 70, he'd better retire if he ever intended to. We're living on half the income we were used to, but it actually hasn't been hard so far. It sure is nice to sleep in or to get up and go anywhere we want to whenever we want to. He bought a new (small) motorcycle this spring and enjoys putting around on backroads looking at the scenery and smelling the smells of the earth. Just be sure you have something to retire to that you will enjoy. I recommend it, but it has to be every person's own decision. Best wishes on yours.

Now 53, retired in my 40's. Unlike you (?) I RESENTED rigid employment & schedules & long chafed before finally escaping 'em. NEVER identified "the real me" with a "job". While these years of "continual free time" haven't brought "perfect" bliss (I'm only a "HALF millionaire" & must "budget frugally"), I'm finally CONTENT (which I NEVER was when "working not playing"). I'd dread the THOUGHT of RETURNING to daily slavery! I cherish NOT setting alarms or strict schedules. But, hey, "diff'rent strokes", & I'm quite satisfied that OTHER folks do work (effectively serving the likes of me)! ;-)

I agree with Tamee you've summed it up nicely.
