Now on video, 1408 is a must see for those who enjoy a good thriller. Unlike most horror films of today, this psychological chill thrill does not leave it open for a sequel film. After taking the audience through a character introduction, the steps of terror begin to climb slowly and smoothly until you find yourself sitting up with a pillow in both hands waiting to hide those specific, disturbing scenes.

John Cusiak, always an actor of incomparable talent, plays a skeptic of the after life, even as an author of haunted locations around the world. He's dull and unhappy following a family tragedy as he becomes somewhat of an anti-social recluse. In need of completing his most recent book about "10 Haunted Hotels", the tenth and final chapter causes writers block until a mysterious tip appears on a postcard about room 1408 in a swank, old hotel in New York City where he meets the director of the hotel (Samuel L. Jackson) who takes every step in his power to convince the author not to enter the room.

Pulling out a large folder to show Cusiak the many photos of what seems to be very blatant, fearless suicide deaths all from the same room, nothing Jackson says or does can dissuade the author from bedding down in the room in question in order to research any findings for his much needed final chapter.

Cusiak's character is stubborn and grows more curious even though he is a determined non-believer. Of course, he makes his way into the room with an eighty year old bottle of scotch that had been used as a sort of bribe to keep him from the horrors that he refuses to back out of. He takes possession of the bottle and the folder of photos and heads towards 1408, regardless of the consistent pleas from Jackson to change his mind.

At first, he experiences a typical hotel room that overlooks the city of New York from the window view on the 14th floor. Then the chocolates appear on the pillow. From that moment to the movie's end, your heart will jump, and you will uncontrollably cover your eyes.
