Dried Pampas grass is found in Brazil, Argentina and Chile. It grows quite high up to eight to ten inches which bear silken plumes which are very attractive and ornamental which rise to a height of twelve feet. There are many ornamental forms of dried Pampas grass. Some have rose and purple flowers and others grow only up to a height of four to five feet only. The dwarf form of "pumila" is relatively rare and it is becoming more widespread in trade.
In the dried Pampas grass also, there are female and male varieties. The plume-like inflorescence differs from male and female plants. Female plants produce plumes which are broad and full due to silky hair covering the tiny flowers. Male plants don't have hair so they look narrow and dull. At one glance, one cannot differentiate between and male and a female plant, but further inspection will often make the difference clear. There is a lot of variation in the growth of the seedlings, period of flowering and size, shape of the plumes. If uniformity of these dried Pampas grass is needed, it can be done only at the clump level not at the seed level.
For artist and painters, it can be used for landscapes. These special plants can be planted in isolation locations on the large lawns. This dried Pampas grass grows very fast and it can be used as a screening plant on sunny locations.
While planting the dried pampas grass, care should be taken that it gets enough sunlight throughout the day. If it grows in shady areas, the growth won't be full and proper and will not produce plumes.
