I was Stalked on the Internet

I've been writing online for well over a year. I started blogging about a year and a half ago about "my life online." My generally non-controversial blog was an online journal where I wrote about everything and anything that occurred during my daily life. Over time, I acquired many internet "friends" with whom I communicated. There were also the various, what I like to refer to as "porno people" who would join the website in a pathetic effort to have weird sexual encounters with strangers. Those people soon got weeded away from my "friends" list.

On my page I had photographs of myself as well as my children. On occasion, I would put other photographs up of other people in my family as well as places to where I traveled. My website was not unusual in this respect, however using my real name on my page is somewhat of an anomaly. The way I figure it, if you have something to say, have the guts to stand behind it with your name or shut up. I used to work for a newspaper and this motto was drilled into my head on a daily basis. I am one of the rare people who really doesn't care what others think, particularly strangers.

I never had any problems with my blog page until a couple of months ago. That is when I started getting harassed by a stranger who, unlike me, decided to hide his identity behind an avatar and false name. I was not the only person he harassed and he was not the first person to post obnoxious comments on my page, so I ignored him. At first.

But he persisted with the harassment with very explicit and offensive remarks. I visited his page and saw that his blogs were racist, homophobic and hateful towards women. They were filled with obscenities of virtually every nature. I pretty much told him what I thought as well as what I thought of his female "friends" who also participated in his little hate-fest. This brought on a barrage of messages and comments from a group of people who probably had an cumulative IQ score of 60.

God I swear this sounds like someone I encountered in an internet chat group. I'm so glad I'm no longer a part of it. Good for you for standing up to this lunatic. My name here on the A.C. site is my legal name, but I still pen my blog and other forums under a pseudonym. It wouldn't be hard for someone to link back, but why make it easy? Pictures of my children and myself are not put up on the net. I don't believe in giving people ammunition, but that is my own individual choice.

You are a pretty tough Lady Michelle-the no nonsense kind so to speak. I want to believe that cowardly man must have learnt his lessons.

Some stalkers may get bored, Timothy. But the obsessed ones never give up. I think you did the right thing, Michelle, contacting the police and FBI, etc. Congrats on being able to get through this safely! I use a pseudonym because I've heard enough stories like yours and feel scared to use my real name.

Timothy, the man had her personal information and was using her children to intimidate her. Nope, ignoring him would not have worked. She did the right thing.

One night I was sitting on the couch in the family room. It was around 11:45. I got a weird feeling, so I closed the window, kept watching TV. After about ten minutes, I still had that *odd* feeling. Suddenly, I hear the tiniest sound of the door handle being turned. I turn around, and some guy has his face plastered to the door window. He was watching me, and when I saw him, he started kicking the door in. Very scary. He hung around for about another two weeks. Tried to sneak up on us a couple of times at night. Eventually we got a dog. He came around one night, the dog chased him down and bit him - he hasn't been back since. I swear, some people are so screwed up. Sometimes I seriously think it would be good to get a CCW permit. Glad you're okay!

This guy obviously had too much free time on his hands. That's why I use a pen-name, and I never post pictures of my family on the net, especially my kids. Too many perverts in the world. Anyhow I'm glad you outed him. Rock on Michelle!

I've read this article, like all your articles, 4,092 times, & it keeps getting better. "4,092" is very significant in our relationship, Michelle. Do you know why? I bet you don't. Heee heh heh hehe heh. Heh. You will.

*Applause* Good for you, Michelle! I've seen others treated exactly like you describe and that's when I decided to use a pseudonym and not put pics of my kids online. Some people will stoop to anything. Disgusting. I'm glad you took the action to do something about it. That's one less creep the 'Net has to worry about now (no doubt he'll think twice before doing that crap again). Brava!

I'm glad he didn't ultimately pose a physical danger to you or your children. But I doubt the efficacy of "standing up verbally" to someone like this online once you know that he is off balance. At that point, I think it is wise to get law enforcement and the site admins involved and keep a low profile until he's been dealt with by them. You didn't mention any charges. I do hope he was charged with something, particularly for misusing the photo of your daughter.
