Myspace Codes and Banners increase exposure.
While browsing through a few Myspace pages, I came across the profile for Hillary Clinton. It featured a variety of banners and codes that Myspace members could use to add graphics to their profiles in support for this 2008 Presidential Candidate. This is very normal behavior given that many bands and other users of Myspace offer codes for banners to their friends and other members in order to gain more publicity. These Myspace graphics are also used to show support for many organizations and social issues. Once I found this page full of codes and Myspace graphics for Hillary Clinton, I considered adding one to my page. However, I chose not to as a result of concern for the possibility of someone thinking that I was voting for or was affiliated with Hillary Clinton.

That is not to say that I would not vote for her, but I did not need that kind of attention or speculation. All Myspace users and visitors do not have the same perspective, which is why these Myspace graphics can help boost votes for 2008 Presidential Candidates. Myspace graphics are very fun in general and in demand. Adding 2008 Presidential Candidates to the picture creates a much different level of excitement. Members who want to "Pimp" their profiles will love to add Myspace graphics that are affiliated with 2008 Presidential Candidates so that they can look cool themselves. If you Myspace members also have these 2008 Presidential Candidates among their top friends, that gives them an odd feeling of prestige. These practices can definitely work in favor of the 2008 Presidential Candidates.

Great article. Only bad thing about MySpace is all of the friend invitations from spam bots. Gets annoying after a bit. I can only imagine how hard a high profile individual would get hit with them.

That's what we need - a bunch of uninformed, non-thinking My space idiots voting! It isn't bad enough already??

Very good analysis. MySpace is certainly the place to campaign, advertise, etc.
