The teacher's pet is no longer what you want for your child. It once meant a teacher who has taken a special interest in a student. Now it rings alarm bells for a parent who now has to wonder if their child's teacher is a sexual predator.

Educators can help to build confidence in our children. Many can inspire their students by focusing on potential they see in their student. Perhaps your child excels, in math, science, music, or writing. Often that one teacher makes a difference in the life of a child.

If a teacher is too popular, then a mom wonders if there is a potential problem there. On the other side of the fence, teachers have to worry about being accused of sexual misconduct.

Our children are in school the better part of the day, yet it is not a place where we can be with our kids. Yes, parents can help in the class in grade school and go on field trips but other than that these men and women have our children at their disposal.

Drugs, alcohol, and bullying used to be what we had to worry about. Then came school rampages of angry kids killing their teachers and classmates and hit lists. Many high schools now have a police presence every day. How do we expect our children to learn when there is danger now associated with going to school?

Staying after school for extra help or to make up a test now causes parents to interrogate their children. Questions that immediately come to my mind are first why are you staying after, then are any other kids going to be there, is this teacher okay?

Who are these predators? They are male and female, young and old. New teachers and veteran teachers alike. Married and unmarried. Well respected not only by their peers but also respected in the community. Molesters come in all sizes. Many go that extra mile for their students, are involved in school clubs, stay late to help with a concept a student may have trouble with. Kids like these teachers and they are popular with the student body.

Wonderful article, and it doesn't matter how old you are. When I was in junior high we had a prom and my science teacher paid for my dress and accessories because my family couldn't afford it. Well years later at the age of 26 we hung out and went to dinner and he made a pass at me. I was crushed, he was my favorite teacher in the whole wide world. Needless to say I have never spoken to or seen him again. I had him on this pedestal and after that he was knocked off of it indefinitely! I will give him the respect that he waited until I was an adult, but it makes me wonder if he didn't try to approach girls in school.
