I'm a father of one and I had my first child May of 2006. I was excited to be a father and I was looking online and shopping at the stores for everything that went with a girl and was for a baby. The problem now is that I have a house full of toys, clothes, and accesories that I will not use and have not used. My first mistake was not listening to other people. I had a wealth of knowledge telling me what to buy and what was pointless to have.

Second problem was that I wanted the best for my kid so I was buying everything new which can get expensive. This was stupid because as an infant my kid grew so fast that most of the things I bought didn't even come out of the package.

Third thing we did wrong was that we picked what we thought was interesting to us as adults instead of trying to think of what a kid might like. This turned out bad because the boxes the toys came in typically ended up getting her attention then the item we bought. I have a few tips for any potential parent. First off, there is nothing wrong with second hand items. Thrift stores, yardsales, hand-me-downs, and even pawn shops all sell things for usualy 20% to 50% of the brand new price. I promise you that if you buy something for you newborn, they will not play with it for very long and then it ends up in storage.

My second tip is to try to focus more on getting things that make life easier for you, for example, a baby monitor that lets you view your baby or a bumbo seat. I would say that most of the things I bought were more to entertain the baby then to help my wife and myself out which adds stress you don't need. My last tip is to buy one of each kind of bottle instead of a bunch of one kind. We bought my kid several of 1 kind of bottle and she hated them so there we are with 10 bottles that we can't use.

Takeaways
  • Don't be afraid to buy used
  • However fast you think your kid grows, multiply it by 4 and think of it when you buy expensive items
  • Your kid will always find the box it came in more then the item itself
Did You Know?
Babies don't care what it looks like or who makes it.
