Where is the Outrage? Katrina VS California Fires
In the media coverage of the Southern California Wildfires has been extensive even more extensively covered was the amazingly awesome response of the federal government to aid the victims of the fire. As I viewed the media coverage of the event I wondered
"Where is the outrage?" My thoughts drifted back to Hurricane Katrina and the complete and total lack of response by the government. My personal outrage was further kindled when President Bush said that it would not be prudent to compare the two responses. Now I know most of you think I am probably going to play the race card but I assure you I am not. I do not believe that the disparaging difference in response has anything to do with the race of the victims. It has to do with the value of the property and the socio-economic status of the victims.
Ask yourself what is the profile of the bulk of the victims of the California Wildfires? Well the fires took place in southern California now the profile of southern California is a very affluent one. Large Mansions, Exotic Cars, Movies are filmed their regularly, nearly every large manor has a swimming pool and many other luxuries. This is basically common knowledge not to mention the fact that national and international stars of sport and screen held property in the effected areas. Thus we can conclude that the average income in the fire ravaged areas was relatively high. Now think about the Katrina victims most of them were pretty much your ordinary work a day stiffs living pay check to pay check with neither the social status nor the monetary funds to evacuate or push for immediate response. It just so happens that the bulk of those at this bottom rung of the income latter were African American but as I said its not about race its about fame and money.
I know there will be those that are naive enough to think that the reason the response to the fires was so much better then Katrina is just that the government learned its lesson. In my opinion this is a really stupid point of view because of one indisputable fact.
