If the Harry Potter series wasn't controversial enough J.K. Rowling stepped it up a notch on Friday, October 19 by claiming that Albus Dumbledore, the fictional headmaster of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, is homosexual. Dumbledore, who died in the sixth book. but played a great role in Harry's guidance in the seventh, had fallen in love with his best friend, then rival, Gellert Grindelwald. Dumbledore and Grindelwald were best friends in their younger days but then competed in a good wizard-evil wizard competition where Dumbledore over came Grindlewald.
Fans believed that, if he lived, Dumbledore would form a relationship with Professor Minerva McGongall, the head of Gryffindor. But since Dumbledore did not have any true close relationships with women, it is not surprise that he is homosexual.
According to an article released by the Associated Press Melissa Annelli, a webmaster of the website The leaky cauldron said that Rowling "By dubbing someone so respected, so talented and so kind, as someone who just happens to be also homosexual, she's reinforcing the idea that a person's gayness is not something of which they should be ashamed."
In the near future, I hope that the Harry Potter series is not brought to be burned again. The series teaches moral lessons, encourages children to read and now doesn't frown upon homosexuals. Even though the series has many controversial topics, such as if the series is mimicking certain religions, it is still a great educational tool. Hopefully through this powerful statement, Rowling will persuade children to not tease those who are homosexual or have homosexual parents.
The real question is - Just because Dumbledore is homosexual, should the readers love him any less? The answer is no. With having Rowling reveal that Dumbledore is homosexual after his death and after the end of the series allows the readers to for their own opinions for the Headmaster. If the readers decide to not like Dumbledore because he is a homosexual, then they were not true fans, and are shallow.
After finishing the seventh book and the knowledge of Dumbledore's homosexuality, Rowling has really taught her readers that humans can never be perfect. Dumbledore's saintly persona has be weakened and he is now viewed as a normal, yet intelligent, wizard.
