Secretariat or "Big Red" as he was often called spent his life after the racind career as a stallion and then retiree in the famous Claiborne Farms in Paris, Kentucky. He died in 1989 and was buried at the farm.
To me the second famous Kentucky derby winner was War Admiral who won the race in 1937 and went on to become a Triple Crown winner as well. I remember writing an essay of him at school and just being smitten of the size and a beauty of this remarkable horse.
Today many recognize him as the rival of the Seabiscuit in their match race in 1938 in Pimlico. This race has been re created in the box office hit movie. War Admiral lost the race which many consider being the best horse race at all times.
Many who do not follow horse racing at all will remember Barbaro, the Kentucky Derby winner from 2006. He went on suffering finally fatal injury in the Preakness and his recovery efforts were widely followed in the media.
To me there is many other memorable horses like Affirmed and Real Quiet and Smarty Jones in the recent history and one can only assume how high Street Sense will rank but so far his career has been quite outstanding!
