Ron Howard's Film "In the Shadow of the Moon" Includes Astronauts' Film Footage

The Apollo 11 mission was simple: Perform manned lunar landing and return mission safely. (Achieved).

Maybe you remember being glued to the television screen with Walter Cronkite on July 20,1969, as Apollo 11 astronaut Neil A. Armstrong became the first human to step foot on the surface of the Moon, f
ollowed by Buzz Aldrin. In one of the most famous quotes in history, United States astronaut Neil Armstrong said, "That's one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind." Not many people know that the word "a" was lost in the radio transmission. Then again, you may not have been born yet.

"You were alive when man walked on the Moon?"

In 2006, I stood staring at a Lunar Module (LM) in the Smithsonian museum, totally shocked at how amateur the construction appeared. It looked as if it were built in someone's garage from old appliance parts and colored aluminum foil. As I talked about watching the July 1969 Apollo 11 Moon landing on television and how frightening it must have been to land on the Moon in this "Beverly Hillbillies" lunar module, a young couple approached and asked in utter amazement, "You were alive when man walked on the Moon?"

After thanking the young couple for what I wanted to believe was a compliment for not looking as old as I am, they went on to say that they heard theories about the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) faking Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin's landing of the Apollo 11 lunar module Eagle on the Moon. The young couple did not believe that the command module Columbia carried the LM Eagle into space where it landed at the Sea of Tranquility.

The Great Moon Hoax

Twelve astronauts walked on the Moon between 1968 and 1972 during six Apollo Moon missions. As of October 28, 2007, all twelve are still living. Millions believe it was all a hoax.

What do you mean there's no question? I question everything you just said. You're the kind of person who wears a tinfoil hat everywhere, aren't you?

There is no question that the photos & video from the moon are fake. However I think there is a reason. I think someone at NASA had already got ahead of the program and made public statements that they would send back live video from the moon. Keeping in mind that in 1969 a lot of the old heavy tube type equipment was still the rule. I think that when all the numbers was crunched the TV equipment would have blown their pay load in both weight and size if not made the mission out of the question. Being the word is already out what can they do? Tell the public they were wrong or fake the pictures and footage? Look at the mistakes you will see that this staging was not well thought out. This is like something someone in a hurry would do. Leading me to believe it was close to launch time when they were told to put this together. It's just another of someone talking before thinking.

This person writes, "Nobody ever walked on the moon yet ! It is also unlikely to happen in this century . Mining for energy sources on the moon is the most stupid and nonsense claim made so far !" WOW, how many thousands of hours have you invested to come up with this conclusion? I am always amazed at how incredibly ignorant people choose to be. Yes Virginia, 12 men did walk on the moon!

I believe only 9 of the 12 who walked on the moon are still alive, according to NASA.

I never heard of In the Shadow of the Moon. This is a very interesting piece about a subject many of us kidded around about for years.

Thanks for a very good article. I remember exactly where I was when the astronauts walked on the moon. I believed it then and I believe it now.

Good job of presenting factual info w/o insulting the reader's intelligence.
