Frito-Lay Introduces a New Line of Healthy Snacks

Everybody enjoys a snack now and then. Whether in-between meals or as a pick-me-up, snacks don't have to be bad for you. I'll admit, I'm an avid potato chip fan. Sure, I like vegetables and fruits, and an occasional
healthy snack like hummus, but when I'm in the mood for a salty, slightly sinful snack, potato chips fit the bill. There are many other choices out there, too, some better, some worse. It's all about balance.

I was perusing my local grocery aisle one day, looking at the thousands of salty snacks available. My eye caught the Flat Earth Veggie Crisps. Hmm, something new! Since I have been getting my share of chips the past few weeks, I thought maybe the Crisps would be a nice change of pace. I chose the Garlic and Herb Field flavor, though they also had a Sundried Tomato Ranch. I was expecting something okay, but similar in taste to other brands' "Baked" potato chip variety.

Flat Earth's crisps are a cut above. When I bit into a crispy little morsel, I was delighted at the savory flavor and light texture. I think the secret must be in the chip blend. The Crisps are made with rice, corn, potatoes, oats, pumpkin, tomatoes, and a host of other vegetables. As an added bonus, the Crisps have less fat than the average potato chip, and you get half a serving of vegetables in every serving! They are a good source of vitamin A and C, also. They have 130 calories, five grams of fat, and two grams of fiber per serving.

I like the idea behind the company, as well. It is encouraging to me to see such a big corporation as Frito-Lay heading in a more healthful direction. The back of the bag says a group of women from Frito-Lay started the Flat Earth brand, challenging the belief that "tasty snacks are bad for you", or that nutritious snacks had to be boring or lacking flavor. They strove to create a snack both high in nutrition and flavor, without disappointing the devoted snack crowd. They chose a flying pig as the company's logo, humorously tying in this "Impossible" task with the saying, "When pigs fly." In fact, the Company's slogan is "Flat Earth...Impossibly Good."
