We're Built on Lots of Sand and Gravel
escape you.
We're built on lots of sand and gravel.
These buildings,
our bodies,
built to erase
the inhabitants lost within them.
The thoughts escaping the walls
through the windows,
escape unscathed.
Beneath these temples,
our humble shells,
lie the very things
that make us whole again,
yet feed the very holes
that make us feed
day in and day out again.
The thoughts that escaped me
escape you.
Feeling the randomness embodied
(and the hesitant prosperity),
the thoughts smother the square footage within us,
smothering the mere thought of us,
as we lay our heads down to the ground
hoping to God to hear the heart beat
of the dead, drowned ground around us.
We're built on lots of sand and gravel
and although
what we should have known
was left to struggle,
what we did not know,
and was well worth
its weight in gold,
could easily be found among the rumble.
If only our ears, heart, eyes, and thoughts
dared venture outside the known world around us,
would we have seen
what was blatantly shown around us:
We're built on lots of sand and gravel.
