Fall decorations tend toward colorful corn and pumpkin displays, spooky Halloween accents, and scarecrows. Making your own scarecrow decoration is quite easy with a few simple materials. This scarecrow kid's craft doubles as decor and a stick puppet for pretend play.

Materials Needed to Make the Scarecrow Puppet

The base of this scarecrow puppet is two sticks. You can use purchased wooden dowels, or collect relatively straight sticks from your backyard or woods. The sticks should be approximately ten inches long and fourteen inches long.

The scarecrow's head is made from one white sock, a yellow paper cupcake wrapper, two buttons for eyes, some scraps of felt fabric, and yellow yarn. The scarecrow's clothing is fashioned from two or more old neckties. They are the perfect size for this project and provide truly unique fabric patterns for the scarecrow's outfit.

You will also need clear-drying craft glue and scissors to complete this scarecrow kid's craft project.

Building the Scarecrow Puppet

Begin creating the scarecrow by making his head. First, cut about four inches off the toe of the sock. Use the rest of the sock material to stuff the head. Insert the end of the longest stick into the sock and use a piece of yarn to tie it on securely. Glue on the two buttons for eyes, and felt scraps for a nose. You can make a mouth with a piece of yarn, felt, or a permanent magic marker.

Cut a twelve inch piece of fabric from the wide end of the tie. Cut off the point at the bottom and fold the fabric in half. Making a small hole in the middle part of the fold, slip this fabric up over the long stick until it rests just under the scarecrow's head.

The next step is to make the arms and legs for the scarecrow. Use the narrow ends of a couple of old ties with the points cut off. Cut a piece of tie about 10 inches for the arms. Slide the short piece of stick through the tie to hold the arms out to the side. Glue the center of this stick to the long stick near the head.

The legs of the scarecrow puppet are made from a twelve inch length of tie. Fold it in half at an angle and glue it to the stick about halfway down. Make sure the legs stick out slightly to the sides.
