The method that is more than likely the most known is to bathe the pet in tomato juice. This will create a mess in your tub, or even outdoors - and if you have a large dog than you realize that this option just may not be feasible, as it would take a lot of tomato juice to bathe a dog.
Skunks are able to spray multiple times, and up to ten feet away with an amazing sense of accuracy. This is not an effective method; there are other methods that are less costly, and less of a mess.
Peroxide and lemon juice or dish detergent are two little known remedies that could rid the stink of the skunk off the pet in a timelier manner, if you opt to go with the organic and home remedies route. Mix equal parts of peroxide and lemon juice, and apply to the fur of the dog - it may take a couple of time
Commercial products are widely available at your local pet stores - these products are often effective but are going to be more expensive than creating a solution within your home. These are often geared to be more effective, and will be stronger than the household solution that you will make and work a little quicker.
It is important to bathe the pet outdoors because the oil, which causes the odor, will adhere to any fabric or textured surface. Imagine if the pet were to get loose while the bath was running, or find his way out of the bathtub, what a mess you would have to deal with than! This oil will mist across any surface that it may find! Outdoors, the pet will be able to roam free and dry and the air will more than likely help the situation.
If the pet has been sprayed in the face, wash the eyes with a saline solution and wash the nose and the ears with a common saline solution. If you leave the smell to disintegrate by it, there are no toxins in the spray of the skunk but it may be uncomfortable for the dog if the scent was sprayed into their eyes, ears or mouth.
