The Credit Union National Association (CUNA) has issued a fraud alert for a new email phishing scheme that falsely uses their name to collect personal information from credit union members. The subject line of the email says, "CUNA Alert: Irregular Check Card Activity." According to the fraud alert, Internet users receiving this email should delete it immediately.

According to a report by Addison Avenue Federal Credit Union, the fraudulent email advises credit union members that CUNA has detected irregular activity on members' cards. The instructions in the email say that cardholders must call a toll free number to reactivate their card. The scam email advises consumers that after providing information like account numbers, card numbers, and passwords, they will review the account and for your protection, they will remove any restrictions placed on your account.

CUNA says you should not respond to the phone number or the email. They are a trade association for credit unions and they do not collect or store any personal information on credit union members, cardholders, or accounts that are active with credit unions. They also inform consumers that the credit union itself should never send an email asking you to call a phone number to provide personal information.

There is another fraudulent email using CUNA in a phishing scheme to collect personal information where the subject line reads, "Credit Union National Association SERVICE". This email comes from a gmail.com address and should also be deleted immediately. According to the Addison Avenue Credit Union report, the scam artists in this email ask consumers to provide personal information as a regular process to update credit union member information in order to ensure better security of their account. It also provides a case ID number and a fake web page that looks like the CUNA web site.

People should never respond to this sort of thing online. They are virtually never legit and should set off alarm bells.

I actually heard of this but I don't think many have. They sent out a warning at my husband's company or else I would never have known. I wonder how many will fall for it?
