NASA has discovered the largest black hole in the universe that is has ever discovered. This black hole is located in the dwarf galaxy IC 10, and it is located in the constellation Cassiopeia. It is located 1.8 million light-years from out planet. The new black hole that was discovered has a mass of between 24 to 33 times the mass of the earth's own Sun. To put this into perspective, the black hole that was previously believed to be the largest one discovered was only 16 times the mass of the earth's Sun. This information about the discovery was provided in a recent press release from NASA.

A black hole by itself is nearly impossible to detect. The only way they can be detected is by their attraction of nearby objects. With this black hole in the dwarf galaxy IC 10, the reason it was detected was it's effect on a star that is highly developed according to the press release. It is unknown at this point the exact mass of the black hole that was discovered. The black hole will be subject to further tests to determine it's true mass. As of now it is believed that it is unlikely the estimate of the mass will be adjusted downard, and if anything it would be adjusted upward after further examination. The star that is orbiting with the black hole is known at IC 10 X-1.

"We weren't expecting to find a stellar-mass black hole this massive," commented Andrea Prestwich who is with the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics in Cambridge, Massachussetts. "It seems likely that black holes that form from dying stars can be much larger than we had realized.",continued Prestwich.
