Boyz II Men's Motown: A Journey Through Hitsville USA Album Review

Are Boyz II Men Back to Their Legendary Form?

Boyz II Men is one of the biggest recording groups of all time. Boyz II Men has sold over 60 million albums world wide. The former quartet is now a trio; Michael McCary has left the group. Yet Shawn Stockman, Wanya Morris and Nathan Morris still carry on the great legacy of the group. On
its new album, Motown: A Journey Through Hitsville USA, Boyz II Men reconfigures classic Motown songs into new editions. Will Boyz II Men be successful on its latest attempt to recapture the spotlight?

All This Love is a cover of the DeBarge classic. This rendition is definitely very solid vocally and production wise. Shawn Stockman has the perfect vocal range to cover this song. His velvety voice effortless flows over the mellow track.

On their cover of Marvin Gaye and Tami Terrell's classic Ain't Nothing Like The Real Thing, they are joined by the legendary Patti LaBelle. The song is very solid but just does not compare to the original which is one of the better songs ever.

On Easy, Boyz II Men remake the classic Lionel Richie and The Commodores track. The song is a solid track but not one of the strongest tracks on the album.

Their cover of Edwin Starr's War is definitely their biggest stretch on the album. The song predominately features Wanya's vocal. His voice is the closest to Edwin Starr's. The song is solid but just a little awkward considering this is a very hard song to cover.

The Boyz reconfigure Marvin Gaye's classic Mercy, Mercy Me (The Ecology). The song takes a more positive and upbeat nature than the original classic. This is a very strong cover of the song.

I Was Made To Love Her is a cover of Stevie Wonder's classic song. The song is definitely one of the stronger tracks on the album. The song has so much soul it is hard to dislike this track.

Got To Be There is a cover of the Michael Jackson's smash hit. The song is very good and features very strong vocal harmonies.

There'll Never Be is a cover of the classic Switch song. The song once again fits Shawn Stockman like a glove vocally. The song is solid.

Excellent review. I can not imagine them doing "War" and disappointed in their choices of Stevie songs to cover. Motown had so many silky, smooth, tear jerking kind of music that the Boyz do so well and "I Was Made To Love Her" is kind of a scream-y song like War. (and I am already swaying in my chair hearing Stevie sing it in my head) I will look for it online; it is the kind of music I would by even without hearing it first.

I loved them back when they first came out. It's nice to see they are releasing something new.
