For many years, Thailand has had an unwarranted reputation as a place where Western men could come to have sex with children. In the last few years, the Thai police have taken the prosecution of these men very seriously, yet the sad and terrifying fact is they still come to Thailand.

What is even sadder and more terrifying is that most of these men come to Thailand to be teachers. Without proper qualifications or experience, often without even a college degree, they manage to walk into a Thai school and procure themselves a job. Within days of getting off the plane, some of them are already at work in the classroom, with as much access to Thai children as they want. The only reason for this is Thailand's shortage of Western teachers and a previous lack of background checks on the part of the Thais.

Thailand was in the news again recently because of the international manhunt of an accused pedophile, who was eventually caught in Thailand. Christopher Neil was arrested in Nakhon Ratchasima just over a week after he had arrived here and charged with child sexual abuse. He is also wanted in South Korea, Cambodia and Vietnam for similar charges. He was also a teacher.

Last year, another suspected pedophile, American John Mark Karr, was arrested by Thai police after he confessed to killing an American child, Jon Benet Ramsey. After being returned to the USA, the charges were dropped against him when DNA samples couldn't connect him with Jon Benet. While he was in Thailand, he had been fired from two teaching jobs after the staff at the school felt uncomfortable about him being around children.

These are just two of the numerous Western men who come to Thailand thinking they can get away with having sex with children, something that would be much more difficult for them to do in their own country. In Thailand, in the past, it has been easier for them because of the trusting nature of the Thais and also because teachers are highly revered in this traditional Buddhist culture.

Takeaways
  • Thailand has been in the news lately for yet another Western pedophile being captured here.
  • Thai police are now clamping down on Western pedophiles coming to Thailand.
Did You Know?
The Thai government and police are making it very difficult for unqualified teachers to get work permits. This is dissuading pedophiles, who might be wanted by their own governments, coming to Thailand to teach.

I have heard from correctional officers in the US that if you are a pedophile you don't want it to be known while you are in jail. Other inmates don't take too kindly to fooling with kids. Can't say I understand the convict ethics but if you want my opinion anyone that is a pedophile should have certain body parts removed (painfully would be to my satisfaction) and every inmate they come in contact with should know what they did and to whom.

"I think all pedophilies should be shot to death." This type of violence isn't the answer, Deana. It sounds like Thailand has worked miracles over the past 20 years. Maybe we could learn something from their successful efforts.

After being there so many years ago I am really enjoying the messages you are sending about the country. Some of those memories are still very vivid and, through you, I get to revisit.

Great article, Thailand is doing a great job right now of weeding out the weirdos.

Good to know -- it makes me vomit to think of people who want to hurt children like this.

I'm glad they're doing something about it. A few weeks ago, 20/20 did a story on this, and showed small children as young as 8 offering men sex acts for money.

I am glad that Thailand had been able to curtail this big problem. I hope other Asian countries will follow.

Razgriz, the pedophile who was just arrested (and who I found out worked at the school that one of my friends works at!) was charged with having sex with boys as young as SIX!!

I definitely know who to come to if I'm in the need of some information on Thailand.

I think pedophiles should have their skin stripped off their body in a public place for all the world to see. way to go Thailand!

I think this is an important subject and good job trying to bring another ray of light to it.
