Upcoming DC Comics Movies
While until recently DC Comics has not reached the success of Marvel at the box office, things are starting to turn around for DC. Here are some DC Comics movies that are in the works.
The Dark Knight (2008)
This sequel to the blockbuster Batman Begins picks up a few months after the first movie left off. Batman (Christian Bale) teams up with Captain Gordon join forces with district attorney Harvey Dent to
take on the new boss of the Gotham underworld The Joker (Heath Ledger). Several photos of the new Joker have already leaked, and an appearance of Dent's villainous alter-ego Two-Face was cemented in footage shown at Comicon in 2007. Most of the original cast is back, minus Katie Holmes who has been replaced by Maggie Gyllenhaal. Batman has a slew of new gadgets, including a motorcycle based on his tumbler from the first film. The Dark Knight comes out July 18th, 2008.
Justice League (2008)
In 2007 Warner Brothers announced a fast-track production for a Justice League movie. The Justice League is a comic book team of heroes composed of many DC Comics characters. The movie looks to feature many former members including Flash and Wonder Woman (who each have solo movies in the works as well). The plot revolves around a government agency who has stolen Batman's database of superhero weaknesses. It's based on a comic book plot called The OMAC Project from 2006. The Batman and Superman from Batman Begins and Superman Returns will not be portraying those characters, although no casting decisions have been announced. Written and put into production to side-step the writer's strike it should be released sometime in 2008.
Shazam! (2009)
Based on the Fawcett Comics character acquired by DC in the 1970's, Captain Marvel is actually young cub reporter Billy Batson, who with the utterance of the magic word "Shazam!" is transformed into the powerful "big yellow cheese." Written by John August, writer of Go and Big Fish, the only casting that has been confirmed is Dwayne Johnson (aka "The Rock") in the role of Black Adam, a former Captain Marvel and Middle-Eastern prince. Directed by Peter Segal, look for Shazam! to drop in 2009.
