Some children develop a love for reading at a very early age and will read everything from the back of the cereal box to every magazine and catalog that comes into the house. Others need a little nudge. Reading is such an important part of every aspect of education, that encouraging a love of books is an extremely important part of parenting. Children now learn to read in Kindergarten and are expected to present oral book reports as early as second grade. If your child is lukewarm towards reading and you would like to encourage a healthy attitude towards reading, not to mention a respect for books, read this article to see how you can start the Fifteen Minute Reading Project in your home.

Parenting Tips: Challenge Your Child To The Fifteen Minute Reading Project Step 1: Introduce The Idea To Your Child. Let your child know that for one month they will be expected to read every night for fifteen minutes. For the child who dislikes reading, this idea may be met with less than overwhelming enthusiasm. Have an open discussion about how important reading is and how much you would like them to discover the joy in it. Share your experiences with your child about how sentimental your favorite books are to you and what you enjoyed reading when you were their age. Express your feelings about how enriching books can be to their life.

Parenting Tips: Challenge Your Child To The Fifteen Minute Reading Project Step 2: Find A Book That Interests Your Child. Visit the local library and spend some time perusing the shelves in the children or young adults section. Be prepared to spend some time looking for a suitable book for your child. If skateboarding is your child's passion, find a book that details the history of skateboarding or a profile of a famous professional skateboarder. If your child has a real interest in a certain animal such as horses, look for a book that has a plot revolving around that specific animal. Do not choose a book that is too thick. Your child may love the Harry Potter movies, but the length of the book may be too overwhelming if he has never read for pleasure before.

Step #4 was my favorite. When I was young, every member of my family would curl up in the same room with their book of choice and read for a specified period of time. That was one of the many things that sparked my interest in reading.

Good article. My 8yr has trouble reading and is required to bring home library books last year. He would bring home an encyclopedia instead of an age appropriate book.

Great ideas! I am lucky all of my children love to read or be read to, one is only 3. They read often without me saying a word, and they bug me to go to the library all time.
