HIV Origins: Virus Arrived in United States from Haiti in 1969

A new study, published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, sheds new light on old issue: how did the HIV started in the United States? It came from Haiti, researchers say.

Michael Worobey, an assistant professor of ecology and evolutionary biology at The University of Arizona in Tucson, and colleagues investigated how the HIV got to the US. Their study titled ""The emergence of HIV/AIDS in the Americas
HIV Origins: Virus Arrived in United States from Haiti in 1969
Date: December 31, 1969
Tucson, AZ
United States of America
and beyond," shows that the virus HIV that caused the epidemic of AIDS in The United States came (with a high degree of probability) from Haiti in or around 1969, a lot earlier of what was thought until today.

Previous thought on HIV spreading the US was that the epidemic of AIDS started in California in earlier 1980s. The new discovery by Worobey changes completely what has been known as the "Patient Zero" theory.

Previous research on AIDS done by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) suggested that AIDS in the US spread in from one man in California who was dubbed as Patient O (Oh), for "Out of California."

Worobey and colleagues took archived blood samples of 5 early HIV patients to reveal the date of HIV arrival to the United States. All these 5 early HIV patients came from Haiti and had recently migrated to the United States. In addition of these 5 early HIV Haitian patients around 100 more blood samples obtained worldwide from earlier HIV patients were also analyzed. All these early sample contained a strain of HIV known as subtype B.

Researchers used a technique used in evolutionary biology that utilizes complex statistical formulae to construct a tree. It is some how like building your ancestry tree but on a bigger scale.

From these complex analysis (known as Bayesian Markov Monte Carlo phylogenetic analysis, Bayesian MCMC method, and Bayesian molecular clock method, among others) a tree can be built that traces the origin of HIV spreading in the US and beyond. This what Worobey and Colleagues did.

Maybe the reason the U.S. has aids, is because americans would go to Haiti and take advantage of Haitian women. Therefore sometimes bringing the virus back with them. Haiti is not to blame for HIV. You should think twice before putting such a ignorant, and hurtful article out there!

RE: START OF AIDS: Get a copy of this document the from the United Nations, titled: "BULLETIN OF THE WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION , Vol. 47, No. 2, pp. 139-274 1972." Read article titled: "MOMORANDA: VIRUS- ASSOCIATED IMMUNOPATHOLOGY." What is the significnce of these quotes? (1). "Systematic evaluation of the effects of viruses on immune function should be undertaken----" (2). "The effects of virus infection on different cell types (eg. macrophages, T and B lymphocytes) should be studied in greater detail." (3). "An attempt should be madeto ascertain whether viruses can in fact exert selective effects on immune function ,e.g., by depressing 7S versus 19S antibody, or by affecting T cell function as opposed to B cell function (Allison et al. , 1971)." It was started n 1970, at request of then Secretary of State, Henry Kissinger with his request for an appropriation of

Thankyou all. I just reported the news. Hope to see more of your thoughts

Due to the nature of racial and religious stigmatism, we must be very careful to focus on a solution and cure rather than assessing blame. Surely, disease origination is meaningless at this point with global widespread infection. Haiti's predicament is largely a result of ignorance, pure and simple, on the part of their own governmental leaders, as well as our own. Extreme poverty results in a multitude of disease and decay. What good does it do to assume that the birth of a disease should be attributed to any one country, particularly one in which too much blame has already been ignorantly put forth. Perhaps you might wish to consult a book by Dr. Paul Farmer entitled, "AIDS and Accusation: Haiti and the Geography of Blame," wherein he meticulously details the damage of accusation, as well as the horrible dilemma in which the Haitians, human beings, find themselves.

Hm. I think the reason people are so defensive is because they realize how this can cause prejudice and racism and because of pride. I'm no expert, but what matters most if finding the 'how' instead of the 'who'. Hence the nature of the very first question being 'how'. Its a bit frightning how these conspiracy theories of diminishing the black race came into this. Although these theories usually have a source in history..Unfortunately...But you guys probably already knew all that. Thanks for the article

I'm not surprised your writing caused some controversy. By its very nature it was bound to do so. What you write is very interesting, compelling. However I'm withholding judgement until more evidence is gathered.

thanks ms nicole. My purpose was to inform aboutthis scientific publication. No to pintto anybody or any people.

Interesting. That is all I have to say.

saying that a white man made aids to kill the black man is rediculus, i supose they made e coli and polio to kill them also? and by the way. if aids was a mix of viruses then someone with a vaccine to just one of them, wouldnt be at risk for aids
