Methods of Aromatherapy Massage

According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, massage is the manipulation of tissues, such as rubbing and kneading, for therapeutic purposes. The word, aromatherapy is defined as "massage with a preparation of fragrant oils extracted from herbs, flowers, and fruits. This is called aromatherapy massage.

In general, massage has many benefits in addition to being relaxing and helps with various aspects. There are many massaging methods. The following methods are:

a.) Swedish: Swedish massaging is the most popular form of massage and includes a variety of strokes which was developed by Swedish Professor Ling. The type of massage has many benefits, such as promoting the feeling of well-being and also helps to reduce emotional and physical stress.

b.) Neuromuscular massage: This type of massaging forms the basis of aromatherapy massage. This was created by Stanley Leif. It is also called "Trigger point" therapy. The overall effect of this massage is to restore balance of the autonomic nervous system.

c.) Lymphatic massage: Lymphatic massage helps improve the flow of lymph. The techniques that were created by Marguerite Maury are integrated in aromatherapy massage. Lymph drainage massage is beneficial in detoxifying the body and to boost the immune system.

d.) Acupressure massage and Shiatsu: This method of massage is focused on the body channels; it also relieves "blockages" through pressure on certain points of the body. It can be conducted while the individual is fully clothed and no needles are required, as in an acupuncture procedure.

e.) Reflexology: In reflexology, the feet are handled and massaged. The focus is on certain points on the feet that are claimed to have corresponding body parts or organs.

f.) Rolfing: Dr. Ida Rolfland created the Rolfing technique. This concentrates on massaging the fascia, which is the connective tissue enclosing the muscles; also to bring the body in alignment again.
