Indiana Ghosts: Cry-Woman Bridge in Dublin

The legend of the Crybaby Bridge is found in dozens, if not hundreds, of cities and states across the country. At times it almost seems as if every city, and small town has their own version of a Crybaby Bridge. Most stories are basically the same, with only a few minor variations. The

small town of Dublin, Indiana, is no exception.

Dublin, Indiana is located on US-40, directly between Richmond and Indianapolis, Indiana. This small town is haunted by stories surrounding a bridge that is no longer standing. Unlike the legend of the Crybaby Bridge, Dublin has the Cry-Woman Bridge.

According to the legend, a woman was driving down one of the local roads with her baby girl beside her. The young woman was from the city, and unaccustomed to the twisting and curvy roads found in the country. A gentle rain began falling, and the woman lost control of her car, sending it over the bridge and into the creek below. While the woman's body was recovered, the only reminders of her baby were a pink blanket and a pacifier. When no next of kin was discovered, the woman's body was buried in a pauper's grave, the baby things placed beside her.

Almost immediately ghost stories began appearing around the Cry-Woman's Bridge in Dublin. A young woman has been spotted walking around the bridge on rainy nights, and sometimes people claim to hear her crying and moaning, while asking about her baby. Couples who park in the area late at night, claim to hear the sound of someone scratching on their car, later finding fingernail marks of the hood or trunk.

No ghost story would be any good without a variation or two. In Dublin, a second legend states that two cars crashed together on the bridge, and a young mother died. With her last breath, she made sure her child was safe, and then quickly passed away. According to that legend, the woman not only walks around the area surrounding the bridge, but also kills children, hoping they will bring her happiness. Several children have drowned in the area, which only makes the story more scary.
