The original "Battlestar Galactica" was one of my all time favorite shows as a kid. Along with the original "Star Trek," "Batman," and even "Wonder Woman" among others, these shows took me to another place that I wanted to be a part of. I watched the show all the time to where it felt like it lasted at least two seasons. The fact that it only lasted one season (not including "Galactica 1980" which no one can seem to stand) always came as a surprise to me. It was a way to experience the world of "Star Wars" on the small screen. It got to the point where the creators of "Star Wars" sued them for stealing their effects. My understanding is that the idea of the show was developed before the original "Star Wars" was even released.

Like many short-lived TV shows that were in their own way unique (or perhaps too expensive), this gained a large cult following. I can't begin to tell you how excited I was when I saw that the entire series was to be released on DVD. Of course, seeing the show again through the eyes of an adult is quite different, and seems a hell a lot of cheesier than it ever did before. But it's like seeing an old friend again after an absence that was much too long.

So a couple of years ago, rumors started to spread that they were going to bring the original crew of the "Battlestar Galactica" back to the small screen. Or was it the big screen? I know that Richard Hatch, who played Apollo, had been campaigning hard for a resurrection of the long dormant series; just as Kane Hodder had been campaigning for the eventual "Freddy vs. Jason" movie. But like that big fight, the resurrection of the great Battlestar took a much different turn.

Takeaways
  • Seen as one of the best shows on TV in general.
  • Katee Sackhoff is excellent as Starbuck.
  • Stands on its own, and is not a simple remake.
Did You Know?
Richard Hatch, who plays Tom Zarek, played Apollo in the original "Battlestar Galactica" (1978).
