The area is home to some of the nation's cherished history, most beautiful beaches, best techology, largest retail and manufacturing businesses, and some of the friendliest people in the world. It is also home to a huge Christmas light display called 100 miles of Lights. It follows the Interstate 64 corridor from Virginia Beach to Virginia's capital in Richmond.
Beginning on November 16th and running through January 1st, 100 Miles of Lights is more than just a Christmas light display. It also involves a series of events that take place in several Hampton Roads cities.
Hampton
On December 1st, the city of Hampton presents its annual Hampton Holly Days Lighted Boat Parade. The popular event features both power and sail boats all spectacularly lit for the season, traveling up and down the Hampton River, giving the city the look of a magical fairy land. Visitors can stroll down historic Hampton streets and even take a ride on one of the nation's last surviving wooden horse carousels.
On December 8th, the Hampton Holly Days Parade takes place, featuring illuminated floats, marching bands, balloons, and of course the man himself - - Santa Claus.
Newport News
From November 21st through the 25th and again from December 22nd through the 31st, the Virginia Living Museum presents "Star of Wonder" in its indoor planetarium. The breathtaking show tries to trace the path that the magi may have taken as they sought out a certain little baby in Bethlehem more than 2000 years ago.
From November 22nd through January 1st, the city also offers a Celebration in Lights; a two mile drive through Newport News Regional Park. Everything is lit up for the event. The lakes frame stunning illuminated ships, the park offers animated figures, and the pathway takes you through a magical garden.
