In Luke 4, we learn that Satan the adversary of God and man tests human beings with three primary tests: the test of possessions, power and prudence. Before Jesus Christ began His public ministry, He was tested by Satan with these tests. Human beings will be tested like Jesus because He is our example. Jesus' example will either lead you to find the path to eternal life or eternal death. Jesus Christ is both God and man. God is a multiple of one as in 1 X 1 X 1 = 1 (God the Father, His Son Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit).

Before those who receive eternal life can go into the promised land (spiritual maturity), they have to pass the wilderness (desert) test. Jesus Christ was in the wilderness (desert) for 40 days. During these days He ate nothing. He was subjecting His body to discipline, so that the Holy Spirit could rule His body. The Holy Spirit gives those possessing eternal life the ability to operate in discipline (self-control) (Galatians 5:23). Your wilderness experience may not be a literal fast, but it will involve subjecting your human nature to the Holy Spirit.
