The immigration interview is a necessary process for all legal immigrants to go through before they will be granted Permanent Resident status. But after you have compiled your documents and you have fulfilled all of the criteria, what else should you consider? This article will look at some things you should bear in mind about how you should dress when you arrive at your immigration interview.

How to Dress for Your Immigration Interview: Avoid Foreign Slogans

When preparing your clothes for your immigration interview, you will need to consider whether any items you decide to wear will cause offence. For example, you might have a T-shirt with a slogan on the front of it from your home country that is simply a greeting. But rather than insist on wearing that T-shirt try to bear in mind what the immigration official interviewing you might think. Since the heightened security threats following the tragic events of 9/11 and subsequent acts of terror, many people who see a person wearing clothes with foreign slogans might become suspicious, even if there is no threat. Some people immediately perceive danger when they see foreign slogans. So it is best to stick to clothes that do not have any foreign slogans on them.

How to Dress for Your Immigration Interview: Clothes that Glorify Profanity/ Racism

An immigration interview is a dignified affair. As such, it would be highly inappropriate to wear clothes that display profanity or racism. Immigrants will want to present the best possible impression of themselves when they arrive for their interview. Any clothing that contains any profanity or racism will not go down too well with immigration officials, even if they do not say anything. They will form their opinion of you based on what they can see before them.

How to Dress for Your Immigration Interview: Modest Dress

Takeaways
  • Avoid clothes with foreign slogans; even if they are innocent, they can still be misconstrued
  • Avoid clothes that glorify profanity/ racism
  • Try to choose clothes that are modest; this applies to both sexes

Super insight as always.

I would think someone doing something this important would want to play it safe and wear business attire, not t-shirts of any kind. How serious does a person seem about gaining citizenship if he shows up in play clothes?
