Today's College Students More Engaged on Politics, Report Shows

Opinions towards engaging in politics have changed drastically for today's college students, according to a recent press release by The Center for Information& Research on Civic Learning &Engagement that came out November 7th.

Research is pointing to a generation that is less detached from politics than the infamous apathy of Generation X. This generation, the release claims, is not only eager for a political dialogue, but aspires towards such dialogue that

is honest and on the point.

This generation from 1984-2004, called in the release, the "Millennial Generation" , along with this eager attention to political discourse, a greater sense of obligation and duty to their community and their world.

The problem with engaging them, according to the Center, is the nature of the news they are offered. In such a polarized political sphere, the result of high fanfare news and opinionated debate and dialogue works to actively disengage what is in fact a bright and concerned generation of college students.

The report was carried out by the Center for Information & Research on Civic Learning &Engagement and the Charles F Kettering Foundation. The report is available on-line to anyone who is interested on www.civicyouth.org This recent report, the release states, is a follow up to the similar Kettering Foundation study done in 1993 which garnered very different results from the earlier report, which pointed to general disillusionment and a lack of connection to politics and daily life on behalf of college students polled in 93.
