Traditional anniversary gifts are rarely given these days. Following the guidelines of traditional anniversary gifts can be a creative way to give your anniversary gifts each year. Here are the traditional anniversary gifts for years 1-10 of marriage, and some ideas for gift options.

Paper. Paper is the traditional gift for a 1st anniversary. You can be very creative with this one. Magazine subscriptions, tickets to a sporting event or concert, stationary sets, artwork, and photographs all fit this traditional anniversary gift category.

Cotton. Cotton is the traditional gift for a 2nd anniversary. Clothing probably comes to mind first for this one. Accessories like slippers, scarves, and hats are also options. You could even get creative and buy cotton scented candles or bath and body products.

Leather. Leather is the traditional gift for a 3rd anniversary. While visions of naughtiness many come to mind first, many tasteful leather anniversary gifts can be purchased in the form of wallets, purses, belts, and even furniture pieces.

Fruit, Flowers. The two traditional gifts for the 4th anniversary are fruit and flowers. You could go with a flowering fruit tree if your spouse enjoys gardening. Monthly fruit baskets, or an edible fruit "flower arrangement" would also be great for the 4th anniversary gift.

Wood. Wood is the traditional gift for the 5th anniversary. You have tons of options with wood as your gift. You could give a tree, furniture, home accents, firewood for a cozy evening at home in front of the fireplace, a even a trip to a cozy log cabin in the mountains.

Sugar, Iron. Sugar and Iron are both the traditional gifts for the 6th anniversary. For sugar, obviously sweets come to mind and could be given in the form of special candies or a trip to a special restaurant for dessert. Iron gifts could be home accents and décor, or possibly fitness equipment for the "iron-man" in your life.

Great article! I just had my first anniversary, and we haven't started any of these traditions yet. Nice work!

I will refer to these suggestions for others-but I am way past this-Does anyone remember what it is for #42-it ought to be something really big and expensive!

No, I don't think many if any people do honor this tradition anymore, but I think it would be a fun way to celebrate an anniversary and that's why I am writing these articles. :)

I love this article. I'd forgotten some of these. But Carol is right, I doubt anyone honors the tradition any more.
