Spin Master has recalled the very popular Aqua Dots, also known as Bindeez, for containing the date rape drug, GHB. When swallowed, these beads can cause adverse effects, even death. Children have already been hospitalized and suffered coma. Spin Master recalled the products voluntarily on November 7, 2007.

These beads have a coating that is made to cause the beads to stick to each other when combined with water. This coating contains a chemical that can be toxic if ingested. This chemical somehow converts to GHB, most widely known as the date rape drug, when ingested into the human body.

Due to these beads, 5 children have been hospitalized. 2 are known to have experienced coma. The 20 month old child swallowed dozens of these beads. He experienced dizziness, began vomiting, and then slipped into a coma. After hospitalization, he fully recovered and has since been released. The second child also experienced the same symptoms (dizziness, vomiting, then coma). He was hospitalized for 5 days.

These Aqua Dots and Bindeez come in various kits which allow the children to create certain shapes and figures. Some kits come with other accessories, such as a drying fan or pen. These pea-sized beads fuse together when sprayed with water. The kits were sold at retailers nationwide from April 2007 to November 2007, with the price range of $17 to $30. All Aqua Dots and Bindeez kits have been recalled. None of them are safe.

If you have any of these kits, immediately remove them from possession of children and contact Spin Master for further details at (800) 622-8339 between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. ET Monday through Friday, or visit their recall website at http://www.aquadotsrecall.com.

Moose Enterprises, in Australia, first recalled the Bindeez line, which is the line of product sold in Australia. They then contacted the US Consumer Product Safety Commission to ensure that the product being sold in North America, the Aqua Dots, was then also pulled from store shelves. However, the product is manufactured in China and exported from Hong Kong.

I agree - very disturbing. My kids will be getting alternative toys this Christmas. Read my article on safe and creative toys if you're interested in what to buy (or make) any kids related to you. :-)

The whole issue was disturbing. If I ever have children they are so not playing with toys.

I agree Kayla. I researched it and apparently the ingredient is commonly used in plastics (why, I still don;t understand when there are other things that do the same thing, but without drugs). However, the problem comes during ingestion. For some reason, when ingested, the compound converts into GHB. Ana, the date rape drug (or GHB)is called the date rape drug because people have been known to secretly give it to their dates or people they know to put them to sleep so they can take advantage of them - terrible because not only are they hurting people, but this drug can kill as well.

Great article...Just when you didn't think the date rape drug could reach our young children. What are this producers of the product even thinking. It is sad to think, they would allow such a thing to even hit the markets or even make in the first place. Keep us up to date. and you are right, this makes parents and parents to be leary of what we do every moment of the day....very informative.

Thanks for commenting everyone. I agree that this is sad. To Mad Dad: Here's the recall info from the Toys R Us website: http://www3.toysrus.com/safety/prodRecalls/915952.cfm?source=0 --My best guess is that the circulars were printed before the recall. I wouldn't be worried unless you go to the store and see it on the shelf. If that's the case, I would tell the store manager about the recall and contact CPSC right away.

Wow! That is just ridiculous. It seems like every day some other toy has been recalled. You'd think that more care would be taken when it comes to distributing things to children.

Today's Toys "R" Us circular in all the NY papers is advertising Aqua Dots at 25% off. I guess the recall notice hasn't reached T"R"U yet.

Are they effective in alcoholic beverages? They just need to remarket it as "Children's First Date Rape Kit."

This is such a sad commentary on what some companies will do(or not do)to make a profit.

I know Lily. This is just too much.

Just when I thought I'd heard it all. Toys turning into date rape drugs...good grief!

I agree Dr. I'm starting to get paranoid about certain things already.
